EBHC patient Regan Hider was the star of the show on Friday 7th September 2012 when she officially opened a new extension of four new consulting rooms at East Barnwell Health Centre.  Regan was randomly chosen from EBHCs patient list to cut the ribbon on the NHS Cambridgeshire funded extension.  The extension, due to planning restrictions, is not a permanent structure but is expected to be in place for at least 10 years.

July 2012 - 'Did Not Attend' - DNA letters

A complaint often raised by patients is that they struggle to make an appointment at the practice, despite the fact that the practice provides above the national average number of appointments per 1000 patients.

Unfortunately many appointments are 'lost' when patients fail to attend for an appointment and do not cancel or let the practice know that they are unable to attend.   Quite often, a cancelled appointment, even at short notice, can be used by another patient.

Sadly, the practice loses approximately 100 appointments PER MONTH as a result of patients failing to attend.   As a result of these figures, the practice has decided to implement a DNA Policy.

Patients who fail to attend 2 or more times in a 6 month period will receive an ‘Amber’ warning letter.   A ‘Red’ warning letter will be sent if a patient persists in failing to attend for appointments and finally, if a significant amount of time and resources have been lost due to a patient failing to attend for appointments, the practice will consider removing a patient from its list.

Any patient who experiences difficulties in cancelling appointments should inform the practice.

Addenbrooke's launches Chemo in the Community service.....

CANCER patients are being offered a new service enabling them to have treatments closer to home.

The service is delivered by the Addenbrooke’s Hospital nurses travelling to GP surgeries to administer chemotherapy and other supportive treatments. East Barnwell Health Centre is the first Cambridge surgery to participate. The service will also be available at St Clements centre, in Haverhill.

Following a clinical trial to test different ways of delivering cancer care in the community, Addenbrooke’s is rolling out the service and hopes other locations will be added during the year.

Rita Bateman, from Haverhill, was the new service’s first patient. She said: “It’s just wonderful to be able to receive my treatment just round the corner rather than having to come into hospital. It is very welcoming and relaxing and I’m really well looked-after; it’s just fantastic.”

Dr Pippa Corrie, consultant medical oncologist in charge of the Cancer Outreach project, said: “Our trial showed that patients were generally happy with their treatment, whether delivered in the hospital or the community.

“However, more patients would choose to receive treatment in the community, nearer to where they live, if they had the choice in the future. We hope the convenience of community treatment contributes to improving patients overall quality of life.”
